Walks in Derby Swarkestone Circular Walk

Posted on October 13, 2018July 5, 2020 by Steph

This was was taken from the Derby City Council website where there are quite a few circular walks in Derby.

It is 6 miles – the only trouble with this walk at the moment is at the beginning of the walk there are new houses being built which block off the route – but we managed to find our way round it! The walk took us 2 hours and 49 minutes – which included a stop off for a cheeky pint ?.

There is free parking at the start of the walk at the Chellaston Community Centre.

Canal Bridge
We want a boat ?

Bridge 14 Trent and Mersey Canal

Lovely walk down the towpath – Trent & Mersey Canal

Old crane used for loading and unloading barges

Cast iron milepost

Bridge 16 – one of the few humpback brick bridges to have survived

There is a bit of a walk along the road now but soon back on to a field and come out to the River Trent

This is a lovely walk – and it’s such a sunny day – it’s really windy but still nice and warm – can’t believe it’s October and we don’t need a coat!

So it’s a walk along the river with some beautiful views

And here’s a great view – pub in the distance ??

Tilly cooling off

Swarkestone Bridge and Causeway – Ancient Monument

The Causeway – although very patched up – dates mainly from the 13th and 14th centuries.

Paul running now he’s seen the pub ??
Sat in the pub garden with our pint
Pint with a lovely view

Time’s was getting on so we just had the one pint at the Crewe & Harper and made a move as we still had a couple of miles to go.

Lovely walk back along the canal – one of our favourite things.

This has been a lovely walk – and a beautiful day – really enjoyed it.

Last little stretch of the walk back

My little legs are aching so off home now and maybe have a nice glass of red – or two.

And our gorgeous little Tilly loved this walk too ❤️

Great post and some lovely photos. Is it really a nice walk if you don’t stop at the local pub at some point? ?

What a great post, loved your photos too. I love a long walk along a canal and stopping off at a pub for lunch. One of my favourite things to do in summer!
